Propionibacterium avidum infection following breast reduction: high morbidity from a low-virulence pathogen

چکیده
Propionibacterium avidum is a common inhabitant of sebaceous glands, traditionally considered to be of low virulence and generally found on implanted foreign material. We report a rare case of P. avidum breast abscess, causing severe morbidity following breast reduction surgery. A 36-year-old woman presented with a non-painful wound discharge 3 weeks postoperatively, and was treated conservatively. She was readmitted 7 weeks postoperatively with a red and tender breast. A purulent discharging abscess was drained under ultrasound guidance. A 2-week intravenous course of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, followed by oral replacement for a month resulted effective. Serial ultrasound imaging was useful in treatment decision-making. The infective potential of P. avidum may be underappreciated. Proximity of sutures to the axilla, tobacco smoking and the potential for resorbable sutures to host bacteria may predispose to infection, and should raise the clinician's awareness.

Identification of Propionibacterium avidum from a breast abscess: an overlooked etiology of clinically significant infections
We report the case of a 37-year-old previously healthy woman diagnosed with a breast abscess due to Propionibacterium avidum after breast reduction surgery. This case emphasizes the potential pathogenicity and morbidity associated with this commensal skin organism.
متن کاملPropionibacterium avidum as an Etiological Agent of Prosthetic Hip Joint Infection
Propionibacterium acnes is well-established as a possible etiologic agent of prosthetic joint infections (PJIs). Other Propionibacterium spp. have occasionally been described as a cause of PJIs, but this has not previously been the case for P. avidum despite its capacity to form biofilm. We describe two patients with prosthetic hip joint infections caused by P. avidum. Both patients were primar...
متن کاملComplete Genome Sequence of Propionibacterium avidum Strain 44067, Isolated from a Human Skin Abscess
Propionibacterium avidum is an anaerobic Gram-positive bacterium that forms part of the normal human cutaneous microbiota, colonizing moist areas such as the vestibule of the nose, axilla, and perineum. Here we present the complete genome sequence of P. avidum strain 44067, which was isolated from a carbuncle of the trunk.
متن کاملThe Influence of Infective Dose on the Virulence of a Generalist Pathogen in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Zebra Fish (Danio rerio)
Pathogen density and genetic diversity fluctuate in the outside-host environment during and between epidemics, affecting disease emergence and the severity and probability of infections. Although the importance of these factors for pathogen virulence and infection probability has been acknowledged, their interactive effects are not well understood. We studied how an infective dose in an environ...
متن کاملDraft Genome Sequence of Propionibacterium avidum Strain UCD-PD2 Isolated from a Feline Anal Sac
Here, we present the draft genome sequence of Propionibacterium (Cutibacterium) avidum strain UCD-PD2. The assembly contains 2,667,287 bp in 51 contigs. The strain was isolated from anal sac secretion samples collected from a feral domestic cat (Felis catus) as part of a larger project to study the microbiology of cats.
